The Sierra Club wants Eliot residents to initiate a federal investigation of Schiller Station.
The Sierra Club—a national environmental advocacy organization—has asked the residents of Eliot, ME to file a federal Section 126 petition (erroneously referred to by Sierra Club as a Good Neighbor petition) on the Club’s behalf. A petition is a legal request by the Town and its residents for a federal investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency into the air emissions of Schiller Station in Portsmouth, NH. Eliot residents will vote on the petition this June 11th.
- According to both the State of Maine and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Eliot and all of York County meet stringent state and federal air quality standards.
- Independent, scientific monitoring data from state and federal agencies confirms Schiller Station meets or beats all of its clean air requirements.
- Schiller Station is already undergoing a rigorous and regular multi-agency environmental review to ensure compliance with all emissions standards.
- When the State of New Jersey used the Good Neighbor Petition, it resulted in a multi-year, ongoing federal court case at significant taxpayer expense.
